However, the outbreak of World War I meant the club stopped playing. While in 1917, the club was forced into liquidation due to a shortage of funds. The present day York City Football Club was formed in 1922 and they began playing again in the Midland League. Seven years later, York City FC were elected to the Football League Division Three North in place of Ashington. They finished their debut season (1929/30) in sixth place but this would be the pinnacle of the early League career, as the club would not finish any higher until the 1950's. York City achieved a higher position in the 1952/53 and 1954/55 seasons when they finished fourth. In 1958, the old regionalised divisional system was abandoned in favour of a Third and Fourth Division. Due to the previous league placing, York City became founder members of the Fourth Division. However, they achieved promotion in the inaugural Fourth Division season only to suffer immediate relegation the following season. The 1960's were a mixed time, as yet again, promotion was achieved only for relegation to follow. York City even had to seek re-election on a couple of occasions to preserve their Football League status. The early 1970's were a happier time for the York City supporters who witnessed promotion from the old Fourth Division in the 1970/71 season. They spent the next two seasons flirting with relegation but the 1973/74 season saw an unexpected success as York City achieved promotion to the old second Division for the first time in their history. They stayed for two season but successive relegations saw York City drop back into the Fourth Division for 1977/78 season. Their dramatic fall was complete when they had to seek re-election at the end of the 1980/81 season. There was only only way for York City FC to go now, and that was up, which they did in spectacular fashion by winning the Fourth Division in the 1983/84 season with a record 101 points; this was York City's first major honour. Again, they only managed a couple of seasons in their new division, with relegation occurring in 1988. A succession of managers followed until John Ward transformed the club into another promotion winning side in 1993. York then came close to promotion to the First Division the following season but lost out in the divisional play-offs. Perhaps York never overcame the disappointment but did succeed in staying in the Second Division for six consecutive seasons before they were relegated back to the lowest division. Off-field events concerning the purchase of their ground and subsequent sale of the club overshadowed their league performances and possibly contributed to their relegation from the Football League at the end of the 2003/04 season. York City still play in the Conference but they have come close on a couple of occasions to being relegated further down the non-league pyramid into the Conference North Division.
