Wrexham Football Club - A Potted History

Wrexham Football Club were founded in 1872 by members of Wrexham Cricket Club, who wished to maintain their fitness during the winter months. This makes Wrexham the oldest professional club in Wales. In 1876, Wrexham's players soon received national recognition when Edwin Cross and Alfred Davis were selected for Wales' first ever international match.

Wrexham became the first winners of the Welsh Cup when they defeated Druids FC during the 1877/78 season. However, the club continued to play mainly friendly matches interspersed with competitive ties in both the Welsh and English FA Cups.

1890 saw Wrexham FC join the Football Combination, where they played competitive matches. They became one of the leading clubs in the league, winning it four times, during their fifteen year participation. After previously unsuccessful applications, Wrexham joined the Birmingham and District league for the 1905/06 season. They would remain there until 1921 when they became founder members of the Football League Third Division North. Their seasons in this division were mainly uneventful although they did finish runners-up in 1933 and 1947 but this was not sufficient to win promotion as only the divisional champions were promoted at this time.

Wrexham FC suffered relegation for the first time in their history when they were demoted to the newly created Fourth Division in 1960. This signalled a period of yo-yoing between the two lower divisions, before finishing bottom of the Football League in 1966.

The 1970's saw a distinct improvement in the fortunes of Wrexham Football Club, as they initially climbed out of the Fourth Division. Despite their lower league status, Wrexham became a regular in European competition thanks to their success in the Welsh FA Cup. The 1977/78 season saw Wrexham win promotion to the old Second Division - the highest division that Wrexham have ever played in. They stayed there for four seasons before consecutive relegations saw Wrexham plummet to the Fourth Division once again.

Financial problems arose for Wrexham as they entered the bleakest period in their history. There was a highlight as they eliminated current First Division Champions Arsenal FC in the third round of the FA Cup during the 1991/92 season. This kick-started their improvement as the following season saw Wrexham win promotion back to the Third Division.

Unfortunately for Wrexham, serious cashflow difficulties once again occurred leading to them being placed in administration during the 2004/05 season. Under new Football League rules, administration meant a ten-point deduction and Wrexham become the first club to suffer this penalty. Ultimately, the deduction cost them their League One status. Although Wrexham survived their cash crisis, their difficulties switched to on-field matters, as at the end of the 2007/08 season, Wrexham finished bottom of the Football League and were relegated to Conference National.
