AFC Wimbledon - A Potted History

AFC Wimbledon was founded in 2002 by a group of Wimbledon Football Club supporters who objected to their club being moved to Milton Keynes and being renamed Milton Keynes Dons.

Technically, AFC Wimbledon has no links with Wimbledon FC but AFC Wimbledon's fans view the new club as a continuation of the old one. It is their supporters who grew up watching former players such as John Leslie, Vinny Jones, Alan Cork, John Fashanu and Dennis Wise to name but a few.

AFC Wimbledon were admitted to the Combined Counties League for the 2002/03 season. Their team had been selected from three day trials for unattached players, which took place on Wimbledon Common. It took the club just two seasons to achieve promotion to the Isthmian First Division; they also won the Premier Challenge Cup. A second successive promotion followed and AFC Wimbledon began competing in the Isthmian Premier League.

Their progress stalled slightly, as Wimbledon missed out on promotion twice via the play-off matches. However, in 2007/08 they did win promotion, this time to the Conference South. There appears to be no stopping AFC Wimbledon as the club won the Conference South title in their debut season in the division. This means that AFC Wimbledon will now compete in the Conference National Division for the 2008/09 season. They are now just one promotion away from taking the name of Wimbledon back into the Football League.
