In 1921, they became founder members of the Football League Division Three North. Halifax Town remained in this division until the Football League restructured in 1958, when they became founder members of Division Three. Halifax were relegated in 1963, sinking into the Fourth Division. However, they regained their place in the Third Division in 1969 - their first promotion - under the guidance of Alan Ball Sr. A couple of years later, they achieved their highest league placing when Halifax finished just one place short of promotion to the old Second Division. The club was relegated to the Fourth Division in 1976, thereby embarking on the worst period in Halifax's history. Countless applications for re-election to the Football League were submitted; all were granted. However, by 1992 when Halifax finished bottom of the division, re-election was no longer an option as it had become automatic relegation to the Conference. Halifax Town failed no better in the Conference and it seemed only a matter of time before the club suffered a further demotion to the Northern Premier League. However, in the 1997/98 season, Halifax achieved an unlikely success when they won the Conference thereby winning their place back in the Football League. The had mixed fortunes upon the their return to the Football League, and mainly struggled. By the end of 2001/02, Halifax Town had become the first club to twice suffer automatic relegation to the Conference. Again, they had mixed fortunes in the Conference but did come close to winning promotion via the play-offs. By 2008, unpaid debts had caught up with Halifax Town AFC and despite avoiding relegation from the Conference, the league decided to expel Halifax from the competition. This was to be the final nail and Halifax Town AFC were wound up soon afterwards. Out of the ashes of Halifax Town AFC came FC Halifax.
