At the time, there already existed a Cambridge United although this was an entire different club to the modern Cambridge United. Abbey United began life as amateur club, playing in local amateur leagues. In 1949, the club turned professional and subsequently changed its name to Cambridge United FC in 1951. Again, they played in local leagues, namely the Eastern Counties League, until they finished runners-up of the division in 1957/58 season. This earned them promotion to the Southern League, making their way to the Southern Premier League within three years. Cambridge United became a leading non-league side during the 1960's, winning consecutive Southern Premier League titles during the late 1960's. This success saw Cambridge United elected to the Football League in 1970 in place of Bradford Park Avenue. Success for Cambridge United continued, as they rose to the old Second Division within eight years of being elected to the Football League. They stayed in this division for six seasons before successive relegations saw them drop to the old Fourth Division in 1985. John Beck was appointed manager of Cambridge United in the late 1980's and he guided the club back to the old Second Division via consecutive promotions. They came close to becoming founder members of the English Premier League in 1992 but lost in the play-offs against Leicester City thereby denying them promotion. The late 1990's saw limited success but they did have brief return to Division Two in 1999. Beck returned as manager in March 2001 to save Cambridge from relegation. His stay was brief as he became one of several managers to come and go in a short space of time. In 2005, Cambridge United suffered relegation from the Football League to the Conference, where they remain.
