Bradford City Football Club - A Potted History

Bradford City were formed in 1903 and were immediately elected as members of the Second Division of the Football League. The club found success easy to come by as they were promoted to the First Division in 1908. Three years later, Bradford City won the FA Cup for the first and only time in their history.

Bradford remained in the First Division until 1922 when they relegated back to the Second Division. The club's fortunes were now reversed as they struggled in the Second Division until finally succumbing to relegation to the Third Division North in 1927. Bradford were a big club for this division and it was little surprise when, two seasons later, they won promotion back to the Second Division.

Size though is not guarantee of success and after a further eight seasons, Bradford were yet again relegated to the Third Division North. The outbreak of World War II caused the Football League to cease and when it restarted, Bradford continued to underperform in the Third Division.

The regionalised divisional structure was abolished in 1958, leading to Bradford being founder members of Division Three. However, rather than exiting the division from above, the club slipped into the bottom tier in 1961. Worse though was to follow as Bradford City had to apply for re-election on two occasions before they finally won their Third Division place back.

The 1970's saw Bradford City yo-yo between the bottom two divisions. The 1980's began better, with a promotion to Division Three. Unfortunately, off the field saw financial troubles set in and the club came close to folding before they were saved by former board members.

Bradford won promotion to the Second Division in 1985 but the season would end in disaster as 56 people were killed in the Bradford City Fire.

The 1990's would end with Bradford City enjoying promotion to the Premier League. Against the odds, they survived for two seasons before succumbing to relegation in 2001. Bradford City, despite the riches of the Premier League, would once again suffer from financial difficulties. They would have to endure two separate spells in administration which all contributed to Bradford City's spectacular fall from the Premier League in 2000 to League Two by 2007, where they remain.
