AFC Bournemouth - A Potted History

AFC Bournemouth can trace their roots back to 1890 when another club, Boscombe St. Johns Institute Football Club disbanded in 1889. From the ashes of this club, arose Boscombe FC. They began playing in the Bournemouth and District Junior League before switching to the Hampshire League.

Boscombe FC continued playing in the local leagues until 1920, when they joined the more respected Southern League. Three years later, their application to join the Football League was successful and so were elected into the Third Division South for the 1923/24 season. Prior to the season commencing, the club decided to change its name to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic Football Club.

After an initial struggle, Bournemouth adapted well to their new division and went on to establish the record for the longest continual spell in the Third Division. However, it was their FA Cup exploits that brought them to the nation's attention during various seasons, most notably in the 1956/57 season.

Bournemouth suffered their first relegation in 1970 when they were demoted to the Fourth Division. Their hiatus from the Third Division lasted just a couple of seasons, as they soon won promotion before finishing one place away from promotion to the old Second Division. That was to prove a pinnacle for Bournemouth as they would suffer relegation again in 1975 back to the Fourth Division. It was another seven years before Bournemouth regained their Third Division status.

One of the most important events in AFC Bournemouth's history occurred when they appointed Harry Redknapp as manager. Soon afterwards, Bournemouth defeated Manchester United in the FA Cup in 1984. Redknapp transformed the club and in 1987, the club won the Third Division with a record points tally.

Bournemouth had now reached their highest ever level of the Football League - the Second Division - and they would stay there for three seasons.

In contrast to this success, the 1990's would prove the most traumatic in the history of AFC Bournemouth for financial problems hit them hard. With the help of fundraising efforts of their supporters, against the odds, AFC Bournemouth survived. They would then attempt to win back their place in the First Division but this would prove unsuccessful.

The 2001/02 season saw Bournemouth relegated to the Third Division but a season latter, they would promotion via the play-offs. They spent five season in the higher division before succumbing to relegation in 2008. Once again, they were suffering from financial difficulties causing the club to be punished with a seventeen point deduction ahead of the 2008/09 seasons. Somehow, despite employing three managers during the course of the season, Bournemouth survived their relegation battle.
